Want a really cool way to get to know and see what the Elmwood Village has to offer? Visit its 13th Annual Festival of the Arts on August 25th and 26th. More than 170 different artists and craftspeople will be in the area showing off and selling the amazing work they have created. All different types of styles and mediums will be shown so there will be something for everyone. There will also be 50 different performances on three stages during the two-day event. This is a completely family friendly event, much like many other of the events in the Village, and kids will have the opportunity create their own projects and pieces at Kidfest, and even march in the Kidfest Parade on that Sunday. A family dance tent is also available for any of those who like to shake and move a little! Food vendors will also be in the area to fill and fuel you up for the day ahead at the festival. Booths will be all along the strip where you can learn about solar energy and how to help sustain the planet along with finding out how you can maybe get involved in helping out the community at the booths associated with cultural row. The Festival runs August 25th from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and August 26th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Elmwood Ave between Lafayette and West Ferry.

There are so many things to do in Buffalo, especially during the summer. The Waterfront in Downtown has been brought back to life in recent years and should be utilized by everyone in the area. The Waterfront is where the Erie Canal and Lake Erie meet, and where Buffalo first thrived as a city after the building of the Erie Canal in 1825. Many who visit the Harbor choose to walk along the newly revived area gazing into the sun or sunset, at the ships and boats and spend time just enjoying the beauty along the water. However on those special nights you can catch free concerts at Thursday at the Harbor, where bands come in and play shows for all that choose to attend. Some of the artists to play this summer have been Fitz And The Tantrums, Fountains of Wayne, and Seether. Show goers can enjoy the nice weather, have a few drinks and spend time listening to god music along the water with good friends. Other attractions in the area include the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park tours where visitors pay a small fee to tour the three ships on the lake and learn about their history among other things. During the summer months they also have some free exercise classes that are available to the public. There are many other tours and fun places to visit along the Harbor and you can find some of them at http://www.buffaloplace.com/home .

Movies under the stars, is what the Transit Drive-in is all about. Located in Lockport on Transit road, the drive-in has been operating since 1952. The family atmosphere, low prices and current movies and updates, are what keep loyal customers and fans coming back year after year. The first drive-in opened in Camden, New Jersey in June of 1933 and at their peak there were between 3,800 and 4,000 drive-ins operating in the U.S. However currently that number has dwindled to fewer than 400 in the U.S. So considering those numbers we are very lucky to have one in our area. On a nice night during the summer, there is nothing better than getting together a few people, loading up the car and heading to the drive-in to enjoy some movies. And consider this, at the drive-in you get two movies for the price of one. Yes I said two movies. And since the beginning of this summer they started having what they call “Retro Movie Tuesdays”, where they show two older classic films. Movies that have been shown since the start of this event have been, “Dirty Dancing, Jurassic Park, Gremlins, Back to the Future Parts 2 and 3, and The Goonies”. When the new Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises” came out, they showed the Batman movie before it to get everyone excited for the new movie, which played at midnight. There are new options for movies every week and the snack bar, which was recently updated, is always stocked full of food favorites. So head out to the drive-in sometime soon while the weather is still nice!

How cool would it be to be in the Olympics? Well Matt Anderson will know very soon. Anderson will be playing Volleyball with the U.S. Men’s Olympic team as an outside hitter this coming week in London. Originally from our own Buffalo New York, Anderson graduated from West Seneca West High School in 2005. While in High School, Anderson, the now 6’ 10” athlete, led his team to a 17-0 record his senior year and a Division 1 title in 2004. After High School Anderson started College at Penn State University. He finished his career at the University with 1,212 kills and 82 aces. However he decided not to finish his senior year at the institution, and instead signed a contract to play with Hyundai Capital Skywalkers in the Korean League. Some of his International Honors include being named “Best Spiker” and he was also the Team’s leading scorer at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament. In 2011 Anderson played in more sets than any other U.S. Men’s player and was the teams leading scorer with 493 points on 420 kills, 39 blocks and 34 aces. For this young man the list goes on and on. The Men’s Team’s first game is on July 29, at 11:30 against Serbia. To keep up with the team’s schedule you can visit http://www.london2012.com/volleyball/event/men/index.html .

There is nothing greater than fresh produce during the summer. Growing your own can be great, but for those of us who don’t have the green thumb it takes, the local farmers market is the way to go. One of the places I would recommend to visit this summer is the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market. Located in the Bidwell Parkway in the Elmwood Village, the Market offers food, art, music and other assortments of vendors from all over the city. The reason that the Market is so great is because everything you buy comes directly from the vendors, nothing is sold from a third party. What you buy was made from the people you are buying it from. How amazing is that? The Market is open every Saturday mid-may to mid-December from 8:00 am to 1 pm. They even offer a calendar of events on their website http://www.elmwoodmarket.org/ . Cooking demonstrations by caterer Martin Cooks are also offered weather permitting. So why not get up and enjoy the day walking around and exploring what the market has to offer.

Want to spend a night under the starts? Go to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Delaware Park. The play written by William Shakespeare between 1590 and 1596 is about the events surrounding a marriage of the Duke of Athens and the Queen of the Amazons and also include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set in. Shakespeare in Delaware Park has been running since 1976 and there is no end in sight. The shows are free to the public and run from Tuesday through Sunday night with shows starting at 7:30 pm. The productions are put on by a not-for-profit, professional theater company here in Buffalo. While watching the show you will also get to enjoy the historic park designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1886. Formerly known as simply “The Park”, Delaware Park is 350 acres in size and includes a water element known as Hoyt Lake. A Midsummer nights dream runs from July 26th through August 19th.
